As I was using editgrid(.com) today I checked out a new feature they have – basically they are integrating web services via “data/info” sites into their web app. Very cool and handy. GoogleApps is probably working on this, but it seems to me that EditGrid is ahead of them – thus the prediction. Why play catchup when you have billions and can leap forward with a purchase? (unless price tag is too high).

Sometimes the cost of integration is higher than just developing it yourself. For example, if EditGrid were based on a Microsoft foundation and Google wanted something that works with Linux and GFS/MapReduce/BigTable, then it would probably be easier for them to simply extend their existing time and code investment in Google Docs. Of course, if EditGrid had some key talent, customers, relationships, or intellectual property that were desirable for some reason, then that could easily justify acquisition.
