Just read this article as I was updating my blog to the latest version of Wordpress (which supports categories and tags) - Tags Are Not Categories - Got It? « Lorelle on WordPress.

This article is short, sweet, and right on in my opinion.  What made the most sense (no surprise) was the analogy to a book - i.e. Table of Contents = Categories, Index = tags.
