Canyoneering in Peekaboo and Spooky slot canyons which were about 30 miles out on a dirt road near Escalante, UT. KivaKottage is amazing! We had a delicious breakfast (even a scrumptious brownie thrown in!), met some friendly travelers, and made our plans for the day. Given how tough the campsites were to get, we headed straight for a great first come first serve campsite with a big site with lots of shade and right on the river at the Calf Creek Campground (about half way between Escalante and Boulder). We hiked the lower calf creek falls in the morning (check out more of our friends on that hike), and then headed back into Escalante. Great Visitor Center for the slot canyons in Escalante, and hats off to Escalante Outfitters – free wireless, great books, yummy food, cheap wine, (expensive) firewood, and any other amenities needed…..we then took a dirt road out to Peek-a-Boo and Spooky canyons. It had rained a few days prior and the muddy puddles had grown – worst was waist/chest deep, but all in all a really fun experience. One of the highlights was seeing a mountain lion (fortunately running away from us!) running down the river bed and up the opposite canyon wall – truly an unbelievable site. The dirt road was pretty long – about an hour and a half each way. We headed back to the campsite, had some ramen, and went to bed.
